Third week in to my regime of getting back some sort of fitness at Koh Tao CrossFit. I'm pleased to say that I'm defiantly feeling a difference. Ok, my upper body strength might not be my strong point but at least my high intensity endurance is recovering towards acceptable levels quicker then I thought it would... The coaches and the members at the box/gym has defiantly helped the motivation of ignoring the thought of skipping the work out of the day because of tiredness or not being in the mood, such a great bunch of people!
Is It Called Skipping Rope Or Jump Rope?
Had to consult Google on this question since I have always called it a skipping rope but after repeatedly hearing the coach call it jump rope. As I suspected it was more down to American/British expressions. I have to share this American guy's reply on a forum, love how serious he is...
"At my gym we warm up by so I own my own jump rope of just the right length and thickness. As an adult wanting to exercise, I jump rope at my gym.
Young girls at play might jump rope or skip rope or even play jump rope. Skip rope implies a lazy, fun activity one can do while daydreaming, while even young girls might jump rope with a sense of competition. But even girls who skip rope do so with a jump rope.
Before I read this question I don't think I'd ever heard the term skipping rope used as a noun to mean the rope."
So apparently I perform a lazy, fun activity while daydreaming when I do my 150 something skips/minute using my skipping rope according to this guy...
I thought I treat myself to a day off Wednesday after working out Monday and Tuesday. My neighbor who unfortunately also is one of the coaches at the gym thought differently though so agreed to join the 5 o'clock as usual. Oh and I was very happy I did so, since it was kind of a high intensity work out and not to much strength focused.
Ok, didn't manage to do the wall walks were you kind of start in plank position and then walk backwards moving your feet up the wall while you move the hands closer and closer to the wall until you up in a hand stand. Think I got about 6 baby steps up the wall the first two times and then it was more three to four steps. Utter fail in strength and slipping around in my own sweat that was pouring down as a waterfall by this stage. The floor press (kind of bench press movement) was better though and even though I didn't manage to do the 8 on last repetition, I mange to do 6 with 22.5 kg. That was 6 with a bit of cheating though!!!
It's Still Wednesday...
After wall walks and floor press it was time to work against the clock... A lot of skipping rope and abs!!! Can't say I love ab work outs but at least skipping rope is something I can say I'm pretty good and quick at so with only 3 people in the group today I decided I wouldn't end up last... yes the competitiveness in me showed it's true colors again.
The clock did it's beeping sound and the three of us got started... At some stage while I was down on the floor in a pool of my own sweat I saw that Monica had finished. I still had some way to go and I had kind of kept an eye on Matthias, another fellow Swede, and knew he was slightly ahead of me. So rather then slow down as my brain was telling me to do, I managed to pick up the pace just a bit while I seen Mathias slowing down just a bit. So after picking up that Kettle bell one last time I knew I wasn't last. Ok fair enough, I only beat Mathias with 2 seconds but I'm still pretty happy about that!!!
Two Successes After A Day Of Rest...
Friday was another good work out and we had a group of Germans joining us as well. Always fun with people doing drop ins and this group was crazy fit so made me push myself even harder. Best thing today though was not the lovely group of crazy fit Germans joining. My endurance still have some way to go before back to my normal running pace but today I was very pleased when I succeeded in beating all the girls and one of the guys on the 1.2 km run. Makes wonder for the confidence!!!
Saturday the last day of the week was also a success for me and I finally managed to do Box Jumps all the way through the work out instead of just taking steps up on the 51 cm high box. Might not sound like much but when you have 7 minutes and you should do as many rounds of below then you get TIRED....
I decided that it was time for a career break. So handed in my notice to the company who I worked with for the last ten years. It's time to pack my bag and depart from Amsterdam which been my home town for the last 4.5 years. -"Amsterdam, it's not you it's me and I need a break!". Read more
