Whats the worst thing that can happen. The hair will always grow out again. I once went to a hair dresser in a tiny village in Thailand where they spoke no English and I was very happy with the result. With this in mind and loaded with about ten words of Spanish i thought I should be good to get my hair done in Colombia as well. That was my thought process that day anyway....
I took a deep breath walked in to a hair dresser's and said the Spanish word for cut. I had approached a lady who nicely responded something that i think meant "how short do you want it?" My respond was to take some of my hair between my fingers, showed her and since i didn't know the Spanish word for damaged, i said kind of the words for "no nice". She replied something that i have no idea on what she said but she was very friendly and smily so i just said "si" with a smile.
Said and done she showed me where to sit, took what i thought was a little bit of my hair between her fingers then she grabbed her scissors and i heard how it went through my hairs. Then she showed me what she had cut as she wanted my approval that it was the length i wanted taken off. I couldn't believe my eyes, what i thought was some strains of hair was a massive bundle of hair and she had taken about 10 cm off!!! 5 would have been enough.... Anyways, what do you say? it wasn't much i could have said at this stage other then "si". I mean i didn't want to walk around with a big gap at the back.
So hair was cut and it's now shoulder length again. I paid the lovely hair dresser with mixed feelings and left. I felt slightly violated as i walked slowly towards my Airbnb, thinking how did this happen? Shoulder length is not a friendly hair cut for me since I don't have a straightener with me. Since i arrived at the coast a few days ago my hair gets puffier and puffier. At least the hair grows quick here in the sun:)
Talking about hair......
I told some of you before i left that i bought a solid shampoo bar from Lush to bring on my travels. Ladies (and gents) i can highly recommend this. I use the combined shampoo / conditioner bar. The hair stays clean and feels soft. Smells amazing. Yes, i did use it a couple of times before my hair was chopped off as well, even then i didn't feel the need for additional conditioner. I don't know why i never thought about this when i travelled a lot with work. Doesn't weigh a thing and no worries about leakage in the bag. OK, I have noticed one downside, since arriving at the coast its very soft and a bit brittle. So stay away from humid climate when at use:)
PS: also good for the environment since you saving on plastic bottles. More interest? Hit the link: www.lush.com
I decided that it was time for a career break. So handed in my notice to the company who I worked with for the last ten years. It's time to pack my bag and depart from Amsterdam which been my home town for the last 4.5 years. -"Amsterdam, it's not you it's me and I need a break!". Read more
