Not sure if it's because X-mas and New Year coming up or what it is but recently I had a lot of messages asking what my plans are. "Where are you going next?" is of course one question but the most common question is more in the line with "when are you coming home?”. Must admit that it feels good that I’m not forgotten about and that I pop up in peoples mind. So thought it was time to do a little update on what my near future might involve...
How Much Longer?
A few weeks ago I told some of you that I would come back to Europe and celebrate X-mas in Sweden with my family and then come back to Amsterdam. The feeling of doing so disappeared after thinking about how cold it would be for another few months. I'm still happy waking up in the morning and just put on a pair of shorts and a top, most mornings I do open the door to my bungalow to see if I need a t-shirt or if a vest top is enough to wear (can be a bit cold here as well some mornings!). Back to Europe now, would mean way to much of an effort to get dressed in the morning:)
Writing this post while enjoying my peanut butter toast and iced Americano this morning, I'm very happy with my decision not booking a ticket home for X-mas. Not just because the weather but also I'm not 100% ready to return to what I call "real life" just yet. I do slowly but surely start to feel that it's time to go back though, miss having steady friends around and I'm starting to get excited about job hunting actually.
I have therefor come up with the conclusion that March will be a good time to come back home. That will give me another couple of weeks here in Koh Tao, around two months traveling and the weather will warm up a bit in Europe. When I say back home , then it’s of course Amsterdam I’m talking about!
Ticket already booked for the 31st of December so this will defiantly be my next destination. For you who's following my adventures know that I already been, so why return you might think?! I missed out on the area around Palawan last time around due to shitty weather and haven't really been able to let go. So will have big regrets if I don't go I believe. Also have an easygoing date for New Years in Manila so that's a plus! Don't worry, met the person before and he is not a psychopath and don’t worry I don't see myself getting stuck in Manila!
I never considered Fiji being an option before venturing on this trip. Always seen Fiji as a luxury resort place for what ever reason. But after meeting a good few people raving about backpacking Fiji I have gotten curious. Been hearing about good food, lovely friendly people, awesome beaches and that you can do it on a budget! So I thought why not finish my trip here. After following rainy season for a few months, I thought it was time to check the weather before deciding. Apparently February is one of the wettest month in the year so Fiji will unfortunately be a no go for me in the end!
Safari, hiking, beaches, vineyards and super good meat! That's what I'm thinking about when I think South Africa. A country that no one ever says anything bad about when they been. Or people kind of not saying anything bad, it's always a lot of praise about everything but then always end with a "yeah, it's great but not safe". I'm not to bothered about the safe comment, managed 6 months in Colombia, Central America and Mexico without incidents so South Africa is defiantly a contender as last country before ending my trip. This will defiantly be a more pricy country though since I have a feeling that my biggest interest would be the vineyards!
I left that part of the world a few months ago, so would be a very erratic decision to fly all the way back but due to road blocks I never got to go to Oaxaca and the area around. Still intrigued and also thinking about all the awesome tacos I had in Mexico makes me want to go back. So currently I'm trying to justify to myself if it would be worth the money to go back for those two reasons :)
So What Is It Going To Be?
January will be spent in The Philippines but where to head to after, that is still one big question mark. Currently the decision is between South Africa or Mexico but since I know myself very well, I know this can change over the next couple of weeks. What ever I chose will have to have good food, good beaches, not be in the middle of rainy season and some fun things to do and see since it will be coming up towards the end of my journey!
I decided that it was time for a career break. So handed in my notice to the company who I worked with for the last ten years. It's time to pack my bag and depart from Amsterdam which been my home town for the last 4.5 years. -"Amsterdam, it's not you it's me and I need a break!". Read more
