Oh how I failed doing a trip leaving Boracay and arriving in Puerto Galera in one day. What I thought were going to be about 8 hour travel turned in to an overnight stay kind of half way and in the end it took me about 27 hours. But guess that’s what can happen when you try to wing it to another place half way through your trip and you not even sure you can get transportation all the way to the place you all of the sudden try to wing it to. Yep, I got the brilliant idea of going to Coron instead of Puerto Galera…
It all started the day before when I just got a strong strong feeling that I had to leave Boracay the next day. Since I haven't done a plan what so ever for this country and all travel decision so far has been very add hoc and spontaneous, I did some research early eve and kind of decided on Puerto Galera but still I wasn't convinced so instead I met up with some people for a couple of drinks. The couple of drinks turned in to a ton of drinks like the two previous nights in Boracay. I believe it was around 3 am when I took the mature decision to go back to my bed instead of continue to another place like some of the other people in the group, very mature of me!!!
Woke up the next day with a very heavy hazy head, still had the strong feeling that it was time to move on but still not convinced on where. So got my things together, checked out, ordered breakfast and was thankful that I had decent wi-fi so I could do some more research on where my next place would be. After half an hour I toyed with the idea with treating myself and check in to a fancy place in Boracay and then leave early next day. But no, instead I said good bye to British guy I travelled with since we left Dauin together a few days earlier, left for the pier with my bags and unfortunately my hang over decided to join on my trip that now was destined for Puerto Galera.
First a twenty minute tricycle ride to the pier where I got on the first boat to mainland Caticlan. Got myself a ticket for the Bulalacao ferry that thank god was leaving from the same port as my boat from Boracay came in to. An hour and a half wait and then the ferry sailed off. I managed to fall a sleep sitting up with my head resting on my small backpack. Felt like I needed a neck transplant after we arrived three hours later.
Arrived in Bulalacao as the sun were going down so darkness was setting. Couldn't see any form of transportation what so ever as we got of the ferry. Not a good feeling, especially since darkness was close. Normally I try to avoid to travel on my own after sun have set… So what do you do if there is no form of transport and you have no clue where to catch a bus or if there is a bus at all??? You go and ask the port police of course, the port police in Bulalacao was the best ones ever. This is when I also made a quick decision that I would try to get to Coron instead of Puerto Galera. So asked where I could get a bus to San Jose where the ferry to Coron leaves from. They contacted a bus for me, then drove me to where the bus would pick me up, then they waited until the bus arrived 15 minutes later and finally gave instructions to the bus driver on where I was going. Thats what I call superior service!
I got very delighted and excited when I was told on the bus that there was a ferry leaving for Coron at 6 AM the next morning, I would make it there in the end. So when me, my bags and my hang over that was still following me arrived at San Jose we got on another tricycle taking us to the port. Wanted to see if I could get ticket the day before and for what ever reason I also had a tad of a bad feeling that there wouldn't be a ferry at 6 AM. Said and done, arrived at the port after 8 PM to find it deserted except for a security guard. I wasn't wrong in having a tad of a bad feeling because the security guard told me that the only ferry to Coron had left that morning at 9 AM. Not impressed I asked the tricycle man to take me back to San Jose. Since I didn't plan at any point to stay in San Jose which is far from a tourist place, I also had no clue where I could spend the night. With no internet connection I put the trust in to my tricycle driver and asked him to bring me to a hotel. Checked in to a decent place and left for something to eat since i hadn't had the chance to eat since breakfast and I was starving. After food I crashed and died in bed.
Next morning I got in to a minibus overloaded with people, the minibus would take me an hour from Puerto Galera where I original planned to go. About an hour and a half later we past Bulalacao where I arrived the eve before, oh don't I love a detour. It was also around here that two women in the minibus started to puke all over the place, something that continued for the next four hours until we arrived at the final destination of the ride. So decided it was time to get some music going in my head phones and at the same time turn up the volume to block the noise out. On the positive side, they were sitting two seats behind me and not next to me…
Finally arrived in Calapan and from here it was only a jeepney and one last tricycle ride left to reach Talipanan beach in Puerto Galera. While waiting for the jeepney, I was toying with the idea of getting Balut from the street vendor next to me but came up with another excuse for not doing it. For you who haven't heard about this Pilipino delicacy then I can inform you that balut is a boiled egg but when you open the egg you will also find a half developed chicken inside. Sounds delicious doesn’t???
About 27 hours after I left Boracay, I arrived at Amami Beach Resort late afternoon feeling absolutely shattered. I didn't have a reservation but was very lucky that they had one last room available. So checked in, got a beer, ordered food and then I was the most antisocial person in the world. Sat down in a comfy seat, got on Netflix and watch some shows for the next four hours, not speaking to anyone and then it was finally time to say good night again!!!
So for anyone that thinks there is a daily ferry from San Jose to Coron, I can inform you that there isn't one. There used to be but that one is no longer running… Also if you ever plan to make it from Boracay to Puerto Galera in one day then be clever and take the 10 AM ferry from Caticlan rather then sticking with the 3 PM as I did. Or take a ferry to Batangas instead of Bulalacao. Also I can guarantee that making this trip after three nights drinking is not the most clever idea or maybe it’s just me getting old!!!
So Was It Worth It?
For sure, Talipanan beach is great and the “resort” I’m staying at is super. Cheep enough single rooms with private baths, good food, people staying here are great and laid back, it’s on a very quiet beach but close to a more busy beach. What more would you want?!
I decided that it was time for a career break. So handed in my notice to the company who I worked with for the last ten years. It's time to pack my bag and depart from Amsterdam which been my home town for the last 4.5 years. -"Amsterdam, it's not you it's me and I need a break!". Read more
