My last stop in Palawan was Coron, which I in my initial planning of this trip thought was a quick two hour boat ride from El Nido. That's not the case if you wonder, I learned this when I booked my ticket and I was asked if I wanted the fast ferry that take 4 hours to he slow boat that takes 8 hours. Again, when will I learn to do some more research when I move from A to B... There are two different Coron by the way, there is Coron island and there is Coron city which is on another island. I went to Busuanga island where you can find Coron city. After nearly three speedy to short days in Coron it was time to return to Manila.
I had a kind of tight schedule in Palawan. Not sure why but I only gave myself two weeks to explore the area. Guess thats plenty of time for a lot of people but as you know I like to go a bit slower so another week would have been great. I already done a post about my day and a half in Sabang and here is the my journey traveling north visiting Port Barton and El Nido.
I reached Sabang Beach on Palawan. To get here I had to take a minivan from Puerto Princesa and to my surprise the ride only took the two hours that they told me it would take. I read online that it’s good to book the minivan in advance but I took my chance and just went to the terminal in the morning and there was no probs what so ever to get a seat + they charged me PHP 200 instead of the PHP 300 I was original told. Ok, only a difference of USD 2/ EUR 1.90 but still, every little helps. Another nice surprise this morning was that they didn’t overload the van, with other words they didn't fill the van to max and then squeezed another 7 people + bags in there!
It was time to leave Koh Tao again and this time it would be a trip of around twenty hours to Manila. This is the joy when you are on an island without airport, it takes forever to get anywhere. I could have saved about 5 hours if I would have taken a flight from the nearest island Koh Samui but after consulting my favorite flight booking site, momondo.com, I came to the conclusion that I rather spend an extra 5 hours traveling then forking out an additional 130 Euros on already expensive flight. You might wonder how it can take twenty something hours when flying, it's not like you going around the world. The answer is: Hours quickly adds on when you have to walk to the port, take a ferry, a bus and two flights + you want to add some extra time for delays in between. You especially want to add some extra time in between if you book two flights with two different airlines. If you don't and you delayed missing your connection flight, you screwed. So why book separate airlines might be your next question. My answer: save money, in this case 100 Euros. That's good enough reason when you are on a budget for me at least!
I decided that it was time for a career break. So handed in my notice to the company who I worked with for the last ten years. It's time to pack my bag and depart from Amsterdam which been my home town for the last 4.5 years. -"Amsterdam, it's not you it's me and I need a break!". Read more
