It already started in Panama City, i just couldn't get motivated on where to go next. So in the end i just picked a place toward west since i knew i had to head that direction. The place was Playa Venao as i wrote about the other day. I did have all the intentions to go to Bocas Del Toro after Playa Venao but then i reached David. Just to clarify that David is not a man but its a city in Panama. For travellers David is more a transport hub then a place to stay. I decided to book two nights at a place here anyway because i wanted to give it a chance. Oh boy was i wrong to to so!!!
To get to David from Playa Venao i had to take four buses and the first one left at 7 AM. Yes, you still need to get up early even if you'r not working:) It was me, a German girl I chatted to the day before and a Panamanian who was patiently waiting for the bus that finally arrived around 730. 4 buses and a few hours later me and the German girl arrived in David. The Panamanian got off after the third bus. We shared a taxi to the hostel i booked and this is when my motivation for Panama sunk even more.
I normally scroll the reviews of hostels before i book, read in-between the lines on the awesome and the bad and normally i make a good decision. Not this time, I'm sorry to say but it all felt a bit faulty towers and also felt run down. I don't mind being handed my bed sheets to do my own bed, happens sometimes here i noticed, but if i ran this place then i would ensure the beds were done up for the guests because then they wouldn't see how filthy the pillows and matters covers are. What you don't see, doesn't hurt you as people say:) Im all for "you pay what you get" but this was defiantly not worth the money. Made a quick decision that one night was enough so cancelled my second night.
After check in we hurried to leave for a drink, coffee, ice cream or what ever else we could find just so we could get out for a bit. The hopes wasn't to high, i mean if you read a list in the hostel on what to do in David and they include; go to the doctor, post office, eat fast food and get a new pair of glasses then you kind of have a feeling that not much is happening. After taking a taxi to down town and pretty much only seen the view of what you can see in the picture below, we decided to head back to our neighbourhood and go to a local bar we seen. The coolest ever taxi took us there, best design ever and reggaeton blaring from the speakers, not the best picture but have you ever tried to get a picture of the inside of the car while in the back seat???
When i say local bar then i mean local bar with approx 25 men who were watching football. I can tell you that with us two gringas walking in, everyone took a few seconds break from watching the football;)
We were just about to finish our first beer when the second arrived to our table, bought by a gentleman at the bar. We rose the new beers to the gentleman and assumed he would come over but no he left the bar ten minutes later. Towards the end of the second beer the same thing happened, another gentleman bought us a beer without coming over. But then of course a couple of guys came over and they also came with beers. Not the same kind of gentlemen though. Not only did they buy the wrong brand of beer they came over and were sleazy and just hard work. They did give up in the end though and when they gave up they also took the beers with them!!!! Before leaving the bar we had a nice chat with a third gentleman who bought us a beer. A couple of hours and a few beers later we paid our massive bar tab of USD 2 for the two of us.
So what lessons is to be learned from this??? There are people out there who just want to be nice with nothing in return but there will always be that one person ruin it! If you a man reading this; Ensure you check what the girl/lady is drinking before buying her a drink!!!
So did i feel more inspired and motivated to go on in Panama after the visit at the bar???? The answer is no, as a matter of fact i took the decision to leave altogether, even skipping visiting Bocas. I defiantly don't blame David for taking this decision and i don't compare David with the rest of Panama but David and my awful hostel booking tipped me over the edge. Decision was taken that the next morning i would leave for Costa Rica!!!
In the end i had fun the few hours i was in David, bar during the afternoon and played pool at a local parlour in the evening. I doubt i would say the same if i would have arrived on my own though. Sometimes it good to meet someone to hang out with, even if its only for a few hours. Also want to point out that there might be nice areas in David as well, maybe we just didn't find them!
How to get to David from Playa Venao???
I decided that it was time for a career break. So handed in my notice to the company who I worked with for the last ten years. It's time to pack my bag and depart from Amsterdam which been my home town for the last 4.5 years. -"Amsterdam, it's not you it's me and I need a break!". Read more
