Yes, I've been back home in Amsterdam for nearly a month and haven't posted anything since but I still have a couple of things to write about from my trip. I can warn you already now that like this one, my upcoming posts will be in a slight random order. So lets kick off this catch up with a food post from Manila. Yep I left the Philippines about 3 months ago...
Manila is a city no one you meet will say anything good about. I on the other hand was very pleasantly surprised but I stayed in a very new and upmarket part of the city and pretty much didn't leave this area. So my recommendation if you find yourself in Manila then head to the Bonifacio area if you do like good food and shopping....
A what I believe is an Australian coffee shop chain that can be found a bit everywhere in the city. If you go here, you should more go for the coffees then the food. Yes, that's an iced American I have in front of me, not a big glass of Coke. What's on my plate or should I call it skillet? It's what they call Dutch eggs, basically oven baked eggs with some ham and a nicely toasted slice of bread. Bread was wonderful but the eggs were so so. Somehow they managed to get this very greasy dish stuck to the skillet and the taste wasn't the best. I would give it a second go though. No wi-fi in this place but managed to connect to the Manila free wi-fi that you have in a good few places.

This might look like a very simple sandwich to you but when you haven't had any good bread or cheese for a few months then it is one of the best sandwiches you can have. Sourdough bread with ham and cheese, served with a mustard mayo. Can't get any better then that. Only down side is that you need to be in luck to get the sourdough bread since they normally use baguette and they normally refuse to change the baguette for the bread. So how to be in luck? Get there in the early morning before they actually baked their baguettes. Yes sometimes it's as easy as that. Ok, there is another downside with this place.... It's bloody expensive so not a normal backpacker place but sometimes a girl has to treat herself!

Another chain that can be found a bit everywhere in Manila, believe they originate from Singapore. This place makes unbelievable good salads. Go to the counter, order what salad you want from their menu or come up with your own, pick your dressing, watch as they mix your salad in front of you and then just pay. Option of sitting in or or take away is available but what ever choice you make, make sure to ask for the dressing on the side since they have a preference of being very generous. The branches I visited had great wi-fi, Philippines standard that is.

One of my most expensive treats in my 14 months on the road. Also had one of the few moments were I felt a tad underdressed for the place. I believe I was the only one there in trainers. No regrets of going though!
Clams, ceviche, prawn quinotto (quinoa instead of rice risotto), some kind of seafood rice jambalaya and then finished off the meal with an extremely sweet dessert. Good service, top notch food and good drinks made for a very good evening! Felt a bit painful to pay the bill but considering what we ate and comparing to what I would have paid at home for that, then no issues what so ever!

Ikkoryu Fukuoka Ramen
One of the best ramen I had in my life but then I haven't had much ramen so not much to compare to. Reason for not eating a lot of ramen before is that I had some really bland ones earlier in my life and then I have just assumed it wasn't for me. After finishing this bowl full of flavour though has given me will back to try again. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing, what if I can't find another good bowl of ramen again!

I decided that it was time for a career break. So handed in my notice to the company who I worked with for the last ten years. It's time to pack my bag and depart from Amsterdam which been my home town for the last 4.5 years. -"Amsterdam, it's not you it's me and I need a break!". Read more
