How to order your tacos at a taqueria:
Tacos at 530 in the morning in the middle of nowhere during a quick breakfast stop taking a 16 hour bus ride between Merida and Tuxtla. One with scrambled eggs/prawns and the other one with something undefined but very tasty, could have been something including prawns as well but I don't know! The pickled onions on top was just super great as well.
These tacos from San Cristobal has already been featured in my Top Moment Bi-weekly #10 but I don't care, here they are again because they were defiantly in the top 3 in taste of all the different tacos I tried. They were slightly smaller but at a price of MXN 5/ USD 0.30/EUR 0.25 it doesn't matter. You can always order a couple of more. The big problem was though that since they were smaller and soooo cheap it was also very easy to keep on ordering "just one more"!
These ones cheered me up in Tullum while it was raining three days out of four. Didn't look like much at first when they arrived at my table but I guess you shouldn't judge a book after it's cover.
A just perfect spicy pickled cabbage with jalapeños toped these tacos in Valladolid. Never came across this topping again unfortunately.
Highest disappointment ever in Merida... Ordered my first chicharron tacos and learned the hard way that there are different kind of chicharons. Not impressed what so ever when i received my tacos toped with a slimy kind of stew when I expected to get some pieces of crispy fried pork belly which you can see in pic above to the left. Guess you learn something new everyday.
My first tacos in Mexico was in Palenque, nothing special which is good because then the bar wasn't set to high. Don't get me wrong they were still pretty good and I went back for more the next day before catching the bus to my new destination.
Oh this little taqueria in Guadalajara, is my favourite when it comes to the taste and size of tacos. If the two tables seating around 20 people inside the place are full then you just try to grab one of the four stools at the cart where the meat is prepared but to be honest it would be a less chance that one of these are free then a space at a table inside. So then your option is to either wait for about five minutes and dive on to a spot at a table when someone leaves or you simply stand around the cart for optimal quick service and just continue ordering what you want directly with the meat guys!
In Mexico City I found the optimal taco compliment, a very spicy green sauce with chunks of avocado in it. The avocado was a welcome cool down because the sauce was burning spicy hot but so good that you could not stop slabbing it on top of the tacos. Come to think about it, I believe this is the only place where I had avocado with my tacos...
I decided that it was time for a career break. So handed in my notice to the company who I worked with for the last ten years. It's time to pack my bag and depart from Amsterdam which been my home town for the last 4.5 years. -"Amsterdam, it's not you it's me and I need a break!". Read more
