Woke up my first morning in Antigua feeling great, no breakfast included where i was staying so after some messaging back and forward with some friends the hunger and desire for breakfast made me make a move. Already decided on a breakfast place called Y Tu Piña También and wow was that a good decision. Tasty strawberry & banana pancakes and with that an awesome iced americano. Got stuck there for couple of hours, a good place to be stuck at by the way!
After my looooong breakfast I just took a short stroll around town, still with that calm feeling that I'm not in a hurry of leaving this place, this feels good! Then it was time with short nap and then some snacks before hitting the gym.
The gym was defiantly the best and most well equipped gym I've been to in the last 4.5 months. Lot's of treadmills, cross trainers etc, good weights, big open areas so yes skipping rope was used. They even had a big "bath tub" where they cleaned the pilates balls, well impressed! After an hour and half including stretching I was done. Left feeling very happy and satisfied, first good work out since San Juan Del Sur, where I tried to have an exercise reset.
So far it sounds like i had a fabulous time in Antigua, doesn't it?!
Naturally i was starving after my work out so got myself a chicken sandwich from this bakery which everyone at the hostel were getting their sandwiches from. Back at the hostel, still sweaty and extremely satisfied with my work out, i laid back in a nice hammock and started to enjoy my delicious warm chicken sandwich and some red peppers that i got at the supermarket the day before. Oh was that a good sandwich, oh it was I can assure you...
Then i hit the shower and laid down to read for a while. This is when things started to go wrong.....
Maybe I shouldn't call it things but about an hour after i finished my delicious sandwich and red peppers i got a very urgent feeling of visiting the rest room. Will not going in to any details on what happened next, just say that i didn't feel very lady like at this point. The next few hours and night was spent between two rooms, my dorm and yes you guessed it, the rest room. I rather call it rest room then toilet, makes it sound bit more elegant!! The next day i had the joy of continue doing what i done the evening and night before...
Morning after I had to move hostel, it took all the will power i had to pack my bag and walk to my new place. I even considered taking a taxi the 500 meters down the road but instead i put my 12 kg bag on my back and my 4 kg bag on my front and off I went. Of course i came to early to the new place so bed wasn't ready so instead i dragged myself to try and eat some breakfast. Thought it was time to try and eat something since not much food had entered me the day before, let alone i didn't get to keep the little i manage to eat. After breakfast it was back to bed and it was such a comfy bed!
Next day i felt bit better but for me Antigua was spent mostly in bed with the occasional walk around town and slowly adding one more meal a day back in routine. Not exactly the way I had planed to spend it!!! Guess i should be lucky since my stomach can master most food and bacteria and thanks for this not happening to often to me! Happy that Lisa a girl i travelled with a bit in El Salvador came to Antigua as well so at least i wasn't completely on my own:)
Never have I thought this is Antigua's fault. The town is very pretty, very touristy but that also means that you also have everything you might want in town for a change. I still believe if I wouldn't have gotten sick then i would have loved it. And no it's not always white beaches, blue sky, great people around you and picture perfect when you travel!!!
The pictures around Antigua might not have much to do with this post but they are more interesting then pictures of me in bed:)
Where I stayed:
I stayed in three different places in Antigua. First place i just didn't like, maybe if i was 10 years younger i would have liked it, not often i make that comment but this place was a bit to young for me so if early to mid twenties then you good to go here!!! Second place was great but they only had availability for two nights. Third place was good to, the breakfast that was included at the third place was awesome.
I decided that it was time for a career break. So handed in my notice to the company who I worked with for the last ten years. It's time to pack my bag and depart from Amsterdam which been my home town for the last 4.5 years. -"Amsterdam, it's not you it's me and I need a break!". Read more
